The American Water Spaniel is a medium-sized, active dog with well-developed bone and musculature. It is harmoniously and solidly built, full of strength and elegance, without impression of heaviness.

Race history

The American Water Spaniel breed was born in the United States from the second half of the 19th century . It is in the American Midwest, mainly in the state of Wisconsin, that it was developed and used by hunters. Its deep origins are not sufficiently documented, so that it is now impossible to know, with certainty, the crossings that led to the American Water Spaniel. Nevertheless, we know that it is to FJ Pfeiffer that is attributed the first real breeding of dogs of this race, in New London in Wisconsin.

The first standard, dating from 1920, has been developed on the basis of its work. It was later adopted by the AKC (American Kennel Club) in 1940, then in a new version 50 years later. The breed was definitively recognized by the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) on November 2, 1979.

Behavior with others

The American Water Spaniel is a dog that is awake, energetic, intelligent and enthusiastic about hunting . Versatile hunter, it has been especially developed to bring back game from light craft. The American Water Spaniel has a  very pleasant temperament , since he is affectionate and very attached to his master.

His  passion for work  and his  desire to please  his master facilitate his education and learning. Supported early enough, with a  minimum of firmness  to develop his obedience, but also the sweetness, the American Water Spaniel becomes an excellent hunting companion and a member of the family just as nice.

Living conditions

The American Water Spaniel can live in an apartment if it is sufficiently walk and stimulated, but it is not its ideal living environment. He prefers to evolve in large spaces , in the middle or near nature.

The American Water Spaniel is a dog that tolerates quite well the difficult weather conditions , especially bad weather thanks to its double coat. Certain predispositions are nonetheless to be observed in this breed: hip dysplasia, mitral insufficiency and pulmonary stenosis.

Maintenance and hygiene

The American Water Spaniel remains subject to 2 moults a year during the changes of season. During these periods, the loss of hair is greater than the rest of the year , where it persists, but to a lesser extent.

The American Water Spaniel can be groomed and his ears shaved , but this is not an obligation.

Physical activity

He needs a regular activity. He must be able to  walk, run, jump in the water and move around in the thicket  when he has the opportunity. He can not therefore be content with simple and short daily walks.
