The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a dog picked up, robust and rustic. Despite its small size, it is full of energy and liveliness. It is also rather fast.

Race history

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a very old breed dog, whose presence is attested at least since the 16th century . A descendant of the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne, he was on the verge of extinction at the end of the Second World War, but a passionate breeder, Marcel Paumbrun, helped preserve the breed, incorporating contributions from the Basset Vendéen and Dachshund with hard coat.

Common and popular in Brittany in the 19th century , the Basset Fauve de Bretagne became known throughout France from the 1970s. The breed has several cuts of France on rabbits to his credit. It is very little represented outside France. The breed was definitively recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) on October 30, 1963.

Physical characteristics

His hair: quite short, dry, very hard texture, not woolly, nor curly. 
Its color: tawny, ranging from golden wheat to brick red. A small white star on the chest and some black hair scattered on the back and ears can be admitted. 
His head: elongated skull, with pronounced occipital protuberance. The stop is more accused than the Griffon Fauve de Bretagne, which he comes from. The truffle is black or dark brown with well-opened nostrils, slender snout and scanty whiskers. 
His ears: finished in tip, oriented inside, covered with a hair shorter and finer. 
Their eyes :dark brown in color, never prominent, not too deep in their sockets, displaying a vivid look. 
His body:  picked up, rather low on legs. The neck is short and muscular, the back short and broad, the kidney well muscled, the chest high and broad, the sides rather rounded, the line of the bottom slightly raised towards the back. 
Its tail: moderately long, thick with its attachment, tapering towards the tip, carried in sickle at rest, above the back line when the dog is in action.

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a courageous and determined dog , especially when hunting. It adapts to a variety of land and game. At home, he is also a pleasant companion for the whole family . Very attached to his master, Basset Fauve de Bretagne knows how to be affectionate and friendly. He is never fearful or aggressive .


The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is  not a dog difficult to educate , quite the contrary. He learns easily as long as it is gentle, combined with  a good dose of firmness for obedience . Naturally gifted for the hunt, it is nevertheless better to initiate it there early enough, before the age of one year.


The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a rustic dog, rather resistant and enjoying a solid health . The breed has no known predisposition to diseases.

Maintenance & Hygiene


The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a dog very easy to maintain . It does not require much effort at this level, except regular brushing to preserve the cleanliness and beauty of its hard coat.


It is recommended to  brush the dog once or twice a week , more during moulting. The Basset Fauve de Bretagne does not need to be washed or groomed frequently. 

Physical activity

If the Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a hunting dog who needs to spend himself regularly, his request in exercise is not important. He  is content with good daily walks , ideally complemented by some games.

Living conditions

The Basset Fauve de Bretagne is a hunting dog above all , who will always prefer large spaces and freedom of movement . However, it adapts very well to life in the city and apartment , provided you walk and enjoy the attention of his masters.
