The Belgian Shepherd Tervuren is one of four varieties of Belgian Shepherd Dogs, with Malinois, Groenendael and Laekenois. Like the Groenendael, it has a long hair. The Belgian Shepherd Tervuren owes its name to its village of origin, Tervuren , currently located in the province of Flemish Brabant in Belgium . It appeared in the 19th century, most likely following a cross between a tawny shepherd dog and a black Grœnendael. The Belgian Shepherd Tervueren was first used for the protection and care of herds , before showing off its skills in many other areas: safety, research, exhibition, etc. The Belgian Shepherd Dog breed, including the Tervueren variety, was definitively recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale on 1st January 1956.
His hair: long and plentiful around the neck, on the chest, the back of the thighs and the tail. Shorter on the head, the outer side of the ears and the lower limbs. Dense, tight, good texture, lined with a woolly undercoat, all giving the dog a good protection.
Its color: tawny charcoal (hairs with black tip shading the base color), or gray charcoal, with imperatively a black mask very pronounced and encompassing the chops and eyelids.
His head: long, straight, dry, carried high, with the snout slightly longer than the skull. The forehead is flatter than round, the stop is moderate, the truffle is black and the cheeks are dry and flat while being muscular.
His ears :triangular shaped, ending in pointed, small, tied high, well erect when the dog is attentive or in action.
His eyes: slightly almond, medium size, brownish (as dark as possible), displaying an expression of intelligence, interest and liveliness.
His body: writable in a square, having a powerful appearance, but not heavy. The line of the back and the kidney is straight, the tourniquet is accentuated, the back firm and well muscled, the kidney solid and broad, the rump very slightly inclined, the breast well down and the belly slightly raised.
Its tail: medium length (reaching or exceeding the hock), thick at its attachment, hanging at rest, more raised when the dog is in action.

Maintenance & Hygiene
The Belgian Shepherd Tervuren knows 2 moults a year during which he can lose a lot of hair . Outside these periods, hair loss is not important. It does not need to be groomed often , but regular brushing is necessary to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of the dress.
It is recommended to brush the dog with a rake comb during moults and with a card outside these periods. The Belgian Shepherd Tervueren should not be washed too frequently to avoid altering the protective layer of sebum.
