Race history

The Golden Retriever is a dog with controversial origins . One of the related theories is a descendant of Caucasian shepherds acquired in 1858 by Lord Tweedmouth. Another story would be that we crossed a Spaniel of water with a Wavy Coated, keeping from each litter only the puppies with the golden dress. Another legend tells that the Golden Retriever is born from a cross between a water Spaniel and a Bloodhound.

It was in 1909 that the breed appeared for the first time in a dog show. She was registered in England in 1913 before being recognized in 1931 as a purebred . It is an intelligent breed that can be an exceptional hunting animal, but also an extremely gentle companion for seniors and children of all ages. Sure of him, he is a worker of nature. He prefers, however, the company of his masters to solitude.

It requires a lot of affection and attention . It is a public entertainer, capable of all jokes to attract the attention of his master or his assistance.

In the case of the Golden Retriever puppy, we never talk about dressage. Indeed, this breed of great sensitivity must be educated through more encouragement than reprimands. His stubborn and independent character could resurface if he feels compelled to do something against his will. The tact and the patience will therefore be the assets of a good master. He continually seeks to please and satisfy his owner . Finally, it is important to ensure early socialization.

Living conditions

The Golden Retriever can put up with an indoor life as long as he can stay close to his masters and come out every day. Despite everything, he will be much happier if he has an outdoor area where he can run and have fun until he is breathless.

The Golden Retriever is a sturdy dog that loves water. It must still be careful to dry his tail, especially at the base, to prevent the muscles contract painfully. The ears are also quite fragile and it can be prone to allergies, dermatitis and other skin diseases. Among the most common risks, it also has some predispositions to cancers , hip dysplasia or cataracts in its old years.

Maintenance and hygiene

It has a thick undercoat. It is therefore  recommended to brush daily  (if possible) or once a week to the absolute minimum to avoid entanglement. In addition,  the moulting of the Golden Retriever is regular , but increases in the spring. At this season, the amount of hair lost is important.

It has  a self-cleaning hair  that must be brushed regularly to prevent the formation of knots. A  bath every 2 or 3 months is enough . His grooming should, if possible, be entrusted to a professional.

The Golden Retriever needs a balanced diet to avoid overweight. His daily ration is ideally taken in 2 meals . It is estimated that he eats an average of 400 grams of premium croquettes . The quantities will increase or decrease depending on the quality of the kibble.

Physical activity

It adapts quite easily to apartment living. This does not prevent it from enjoying at least one exit per day, preferably in places near water or swamp. He needs to exercise vigorously for 30 minutes and twice a day in order to channel his boundless energy. It is a dog that overflows with life and loves to play outside especially with soft toys.
