Choosing good treats for your dog
Posted on October 17 2018
Playing on the greed of dogs by giving them some treats, it is a common gesture and hardly blameworthy. Nevertheless, it becomes prejudicial when one opts for unsuitable products, bad in terms of health and behavior.
We love to please our dogs by offering them a treat from time to time. On the other hand, care must be taken not to abuse them and to choose them well so as not to turn them into poisoned gifts.

The advantage of dog treats
Treats come with many benefits . First, they help establish and strengthen the bonds between you and your four-legged friend. By making him happy, you reinforce your complicity . Treats are also an excellent tool for positive education . They greatly facilitate learning by rewarding each time your dog executes your order and displays the desired behavior.
They are also useful when you have to take a medicine ; it is often simpler and more convenient to pass the tablets with biscuits or croquettes. Finally, some treats specially developed for the oral hygiene of the dog exert a mechanical action which prevents the formation of dental plaque and tartar.
Choose treats adapted to your dog
If you really want to please your dog without hurting him, ban the leftover meal . To give him such food, often too rich, not at all adapted to the needs of the animal and poorly assimilated by his organism, is not only bad for his health , but also for his behavior.
It is indeed an unfortunate habit that can put his body in danger because of the risk of obesity that it promotes and the dangers it entails (salt, sugar, chocolate, lactose, fat, small bone debris that can cause injury ...). At the same time, the dog can begin to systematically claim his "due" during your meals, which becomes extremely annoying everyday.
Industrial treats specially designed for dogs are much more appropriate. On the other hand, not all products of this type are equal. Certain cow leather bones are to be avoided because they are treated with sodium sulphite and hydrogen peroxide. Same for dried dog pig ears , which are not all of the same quality. The best is to choose biscuits , snacks , croquettes and chewy bones adapted to the size and age of the dog.
You can also simply take some kibble from the daily ration for your dog and use it as a treat to make sure you do not exceed the intake it really needs.
To be sure of the composition of treats to give your dog, the best way is to prepare them yourself. Here's a simple homemade cookie recipe to implement. To do this you will need the following ingredients:
