How does pollution affect dogs?
Posted on June 07 2018
People exposed to too much pollution may have an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease or respiratory symptoms such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, tightness in the chest and chest pain. In extreme cases, exposing yourself too much to contamination can lead to premature death in more vulnerable people such as the elderly, young children and people with pre-existing cardiovascular diseases. But how does pollution affect our dogs?
Pollution in urban and suburban areas
Animals in urban areas are at particular risk from air pollution and exhaust gases, while suburban and rural animals may be exposed to sprayed toxins such as insecticides, fungicides and herbicides.
Studies show that dogs suffer an increased risk of tumors when exposed to contaminated air for a prolonged period of time. Particles in the air have been associated with cardiac arrests in dogs and many veterinarians have sometimes attributed dog deaths to the effects of contamination. Pollution directly affects the olfactory sense, and this is the main way for dogs to communicate with each other, recognize each other, detect hierarchies or identify their health status with one another.
In one study, they examined the brains of dogs that had been exposed to air pollution in Mexico City and compared them to the brains of dogs from less polluted cities. The brain of dogs from Mexico City showed increased inflammation and pathology including neurofibrillary tangles, parts that serve as a major marker for Alzheimer's disease in humans.
Approximately 33% of the dogs in one study were diagnosed with canine malignant lymphoma, a form of cancer. The study also revealed that dogs were 70% more likely to get lymphoma if their owner used pesticides in their yard.
1. Check the pollution rates. Remember that if it is greater than 100 points, it is better to limit the outdoor ones with your dog. If it is over 150, it is best to try to avoid activities outside with your dog altogether.
2. Make sure the pesticides you use are natural and do not harm your puppy. There are many products that can be toxic to your puppy, make sure to use only those that do not harm your health.
3. Use games to entertain also in the interior of the house
A very good way to entertain your dog as long as possible is with interactive toys that make him challenge his intelligence.
4. It is also very important to avoid smoking with him (especially in close quarters) because the sensitivity of the smell of our dogs is greater than ours and secondhand smoke is also very harmful to them.
