How To Drive Safely With Your Dog

Being out and about with your furry family members is always an amazing experience. You may be heading for a day out, off on a little holiday or just popping down to the local park. It’s always lovely to have our dogs with us and it can be magical for both you and your dog.

Have you even considered safety when driving with your dog in the car though? Some dogs are perfectly behaved, and they sit calmly and patiently on the back seat. However, most of our dogs are not quite so well behaved in the car. It may be that they are over excited, nervous or just bored, but it can lead to some very dangerous situations when driving. Especially if you’re driving along and your dog decides this is the perfect time to sit on your lap, have a little kiss or cuddle, jump around or tries to stick their head out the window. All of these activities can be distractions to you when driving. Did you know that in some countries, including the UK, it is even against the law not to have your dog suitably restrained in the car?

Having said that, we love our pets, and wouldn’t want to miss out on taking them out with us! But thinking about ways of travelling safely with them, such as using a pet car seat carrier or a doggy seat belt, is vital for all families. And the great new is, there are now a number of options available for you out there!

  1. Seatbelt harness

A Seatbelt harness is a simple way of keeping you and your pets safer when travelling. They come in a number of different shapes and sizes, and they prevent your pampered pouch from leaping around in excitement. These are made up of a harness that fits snugly (but not too tightly) around your dog, which then clips onto a seat belt lead which is popped in just like a normal seat belt. Meaning when the driver asks, everyone got their seatbelt on? Not even your dog is left out! J And just like you, your dog will still have the freedom to move around, just in a smaller area, and still enjoy watching the world pass out of the window.

  1. Pet car seat carrier

A pet car seat carrier is great for ensuring your pet is safe and comfortable on their travels. These carriers are light, and attach to headrests and seat belts, ensuring that your pet is secured safely in the car. The carrier also prevents them from causing distractions in the car by jumping around or being able to pop their heads out of the windows. A mesh top and side also means that you are still able to see your dog, and they can still see you. And if you are worried about how your dog would react to being in a carrier, then you can always use it indoors to start off with, to get your dog use to being in it. Watch telly with your furry friend together, but let them sit and watch their favourite programme from the comfort of their new pet car seat carrier.

  1. Dog cage

A dog cage is simply a cage which sits in the back of your car, either in the boot or on the back seat. It enables your dog to have their own place to sit whilst travelling, without having to worry about them trying to get to you at the front of the car. Your dog is able to move freely around the cage, and they can even have their own blankets and favourite toy to keep them company during the journey.

  1. Dog guard

A dog guard goes between the boot of the car and the back seat, effectively keeping your dog in the boot of the car. As long as you have a big enough boot for your dog, your dog can enjoy the freedom of stretching out and relaxing, whilst you as the driver can focus fully on the road. This is also great if you have more than one dog as only one guard is needed to keep them both safely in the boot.
