Learn to meditate with your dog

The basic principle of meditation is the here and now. The idea is to get the mind blank and let any thoughts that cross the head just go through, that is, try not to think about anything to be able to rest the mind, have clarity, lower stress levels and feel better.

Many people have heard about the benefits of meditating and some advice on how to do it, but when we try or get stuck in a thought or fall asleep . However, many of us who love dogs may find it easier to get excited if we think we are doing something for our dogs and that, in turn, will benefit us as well.

Dogs are excellent to meditate because they are not worried about work or to raise the house or for the task, they live the moment, they are.

The author James Jacobson wrote a book with techniques to meditate with your dog. How to meditate with your dog teaches us some basic steps to start meditating with our dogs and thus achieve something good for both . According to the author, dogs are natural meditation gurus and we should take the opportunity to be taught how to do it.

You do not need more than 10 minutes a day . Think also that dedicating 10 minutes of the day to your dog is something you already do.

  • Choose a comfortable place. Sit or lie down with your dog. Make this a ritual, put music, light some candles or simply choose a comfortable place and just go to bed with your dog.

  • The breathing. The basis of meditation is breathing. The first thing you should do is sit down with your dog to follow his breathing. To make it easier, you can put one hand on your chest and another on your lower back. At first you will have to breathe faster but as time goes by and this becomes more constant, you will notice that your breathing becomes more relaxed and merges with yours. Think that your dog is a being that wants to be part of the pack so it will start to follow your breathing rhythm because it wants to be with you. Getting used to breathing can take even a week, be patient, Rome was not built in a day.
  • Let go of the thoughts. It is impossible to blank your mind from one moment to another but letting thoughts pass is something you can do. If you start thinking about something, let go. This is where your dog will be of great help to you, concentrate on following your breath, stroking it and seeing it and with that you can stay focused.

  • Finish your ritual. When you finish meditating, close your ritual with something, from a simple thank you to a mantra. A mantra is a phrase that you like, it does not need to be something in Sanskrit or sung, you can say something like thanks for having the best dog in the world or something that inspires you.

  • Repeat. Consistency is extremely important. Try to do it for at least 10 days and if you like the results, it will be easier to do so. If you already want to make a habit, they say that if you do something 21 days a routine is formed and it will be something you can do every day to improve your health and that of your dog.

Meditating also has benefits for your dog, it relaxes him, reinforces the emotional bond with you and makes him more open to learn new things.
