The most common allergy symptom that dogs manifest is scratching. Because constant scratching can result in open wounds, raised welts, and even hair loss, dog owners have to be careful when it comes to feeding and exposing their pets. Dog owners have to educate themselves about the symptoms and treatment options of the dog's allergy in order to keep their best friend as comfortable as possible.

Basic concepts

There are several types of allergies: air, food, fleas, and contact. All dogs are prone to one or a combination of these allergies. It usually affects them when there are a couple of years old, although some cases report that even small, five month old dogs have already suffered from it. Dogs that have been affected by allergies often suffer throughout their lives, and symptoms usually get worse as they get older.

The common symptoms of allergy

You should suspect that your dog has allergies if he relentlessly:
1. Scratches your ears
2. Licks or chews your feet or other parts of the body
3. Rubs your face against the floor or furniture
4. Sneezes or has a runny nose
5. Vomits or has diarrhea
6. Coughing or wheezing
7. Has spots, pimples, bumps or open sores
8. Has a reddish coloration of the hair on the legs or between the toes
9. Has red or watery eyes
10. Have ear infections

The diagnosis of dog allergies

Once you suspect that your dog is suffering from allergies, you should immediately consult your veterinarian. Veterinarians often make a preliminary diagnosis, as well as the treatment plan based on various data. These include the season of the year, when the dog manifests allergy symptoms, most of the specific places of the body that are found to be the most spicy, and the response of itching to certain medications, such as shampoos, steroids and antihistamines

If the initial treatment plan does not offer relief for your dog, your veterinarian will probably recommend a more specific allergy test. This procedure is usually done, either by taking a blood test or by performing the intradermal skin test. Blood tests are reliable for the detection of allergy in the air, but not so good when it comes to the identification of food or contact allergies. Skin tests, however, are considered to be more accurate, since it involves shaving a small patch of hair on the side of the dog, and then injecting a minimal amount of allergens under your skin.

Like people, dogs can be allergic to a wide range of things like pollen and herbs, certain foods, even cats! Working closely with your veterinarian to diagnose an allergy and treatment that will make your dog much more comfortable.
