It is caused by bacteria that accumulate in the urinary tract. Women have a shorter urethra and result in a higher incidence of canine urinary tract infection in female dogs. However, urinary tract infections are frequent in dogs as well. The symptoms of urinary tract infection are clearly visible, and acting at the right time is essential to prevent future diseases.

Excess of drinking water

A dog with UI will drink more water than usual. You will notice that the water container has to be filled several times per day. Dogs with diabetes also drink a lot of water. However, if you notice other symptoms of urinary infection you can safely say that the dog has a urinary infection.

Excessive urination

Excessive urination is a direct result of excessive drinking of water. A dog with urinary tract infection urinates smaller amounts of urine in several episodes. Your dog will even urinate in unusual places in the house and less in the sandbox.

Blood in the urine

Blood in the urine may be present in some cases of urinary tract infection dog. You should take your dog to the vet immediately if you notice this. However, blood in the urine can be a symptom of other diseases as well.

Fatigue and behavior changes

A dog with a bladder infection will be lethargic, less active and may experience behavioral changes. Your dog may be less affectionate, more irritable and may develop sudden aggression.

Pain when urinating

The infection causes pain when urinating, so your dog can refrain from urinating or you can even see it cry, strain or make strange noises when urinating.

Spray on the Camera

The dog feels pain when urinating and pain associated with this point of its normal urination. Most likely, you are looking for places to urinate and avoid pain. It is sprayed all around your house.

Smell of unusual urine

If your dog has a urinary infection, the smell and even the color of the urine will undergo some modifications. As a dog owner, you should be familiar with the smell of normal dog urine. Each time you detect a different smell, this can be an indicator of a health problem.

When you see any of these changes in your dog you should point to a urinary problem. A veterinarian can establish the actual diagnosis, and a urine sample is sufficient to confirm the infection.

The treatment can be with antibiotics or you can opt for homeopathic remedies. Analgesics are necessary if your dog is in a lot of pain.

If left untreated, a urinary tract infection in dogs can cause kidney disease or even kidney failure.

To prevent urinary tract infection, watch your dog's diet. Offer a combination of dry and moist foods and fresh water at all times. Change the bowl of water at least once a day, so it is clean. Bathe your dog and take him for regular walks that stimulate urination and make sure he urinates, and does not stay in the urine for too long, causing an accumulation of bacteria.
