Every dog occasionally has abnormal dog feces, such as constipation or diarrhea. However, there are occasions when abnormal stool is a cause for concern.

Diarrhea

Most veterinarians define diarrhea as stool that is softer than it should be. This can occur for a variety of reasons, most commonly from dogs that consume something that does not agree with them. This can be your own food, junk or something that you find on a walk. mild illnesses and food allergies can also cause diarrhea.

Diarrhea can have a strange color, shape or smell, and can be watery or just mild. All this is normal if it does not persist for more than a couple of days. If so, consult your veterinarian. If your dog has a fever or becomes dehydrated, you should also visit a veterinarian.

To help your dog reaffirm its feces, feed a soft diet for a few days, consisting of boiled, skinless chicken and rice, about half of each. Add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix), and a tablespoon of cottage cheese.

Constipation

Although it is not necessarily an abnormal stool, if your dog has problems to relieve itself, this can also be a problem. If he strives or passes through the movements, while only passing the gas, this is considered abnormal.

Again, this could be caused by a mild illness or the consumption of an appropriate item. A veterinarian can prescribe you with medications to loosen your stool, or you can give your dog fiber, such as canned pumpkin or cooked oatmeal. If it persists for more than a couple of days, talk to your veterinarian.

The parasites

If normal stools or diarrhea is accompanied by a series of unusual items, your dog may have parasites. Parasites in the feces may look like real live worms or they may just look a little strange, like grains of rice. Usually, it counts for several, not just one.

Tapeworms are seen as small grains of rice, since they are cut into small segments, once digested. Whipworms look like long pieces of string with a longer end. Other types of worms are only excreted in egg form and can be difficult to detect. However, they can cause diarrhea or blood in the stool.

Other abnormal stool

Some dogs excrete feces that appear to be covered in blood or mucus. If it only happens once or twice, it's nothing to worry about. However, if your dog has these problems constantly, it can be indicative of a much larger problem.

Blood in the stool was once thought to be quite serious, but now, small amounts can appear if a dog swallows something that does not agree with it. If the stool has a little red blood, it is from the rectum and can simply indicate the effort. However, dark stool, which looks tarry black indicates an internal hemorrhage, so consult a veterinarian immediately.

Many diseases can cause abnormal stools, such as Giardia, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, liver disease, thyroid disease, kidney disease and different types of tumors. If abnormal dog feces persist, consult a veterinarian. Otherwise, a soft diet usually eliminates the problem.
