Being educated about the stages of canine growth can help you make more informed decisions about diet, your dog's hygiene, and even insurance requirements. At the same time, it is important to know that there is no generic formula that can be applied to determine the growth and maturation phases of puppies. Each dog is different, even though, there are some guidelines that can help determine where your puppy is in full development.

So when dogs are puppies no longer?

When are adult dogs? Well, it depends on the race. Not all dog breeds grow at the same speed, so do not be scared if you think that behind your puppy.

In general, small breeds grow to their maximum height and length in about 6-8 months. It is loaded until its adult weight in another 4-6 months.

For medium-sized breeds, it can take up to 12-15 months before they reach their maximum height and length, and usually reach their weight of about 6 months later.

For large breed dogs, the process of physical growth is a little longer. They take almost 18 months to reach their full size and another 6 months to fill their adult weight.

To give you an idea of how fast a dog grows, here is a good video of the first 12 weeks of a puppy's life:

When a dog matures sexually?

Sexual maturity varies from race to race. Dogs belonging to smaller breeds usually mature sexually sooner than the larger breeds. In general, males are able to reproduce at six months, but reach full sexual maturity when they are about 12-15 months of age. Similarly, bitches have their first heat season when they are between 6-12 months of age.

Just like physical growth, however, do not confuse sexual growth as a sign of your dog reaching full adulthood. Sexual maturity is only one stage of the overall growth process. The process of learning and socializing their most important teeth of dogs on their way to adulthood continues long after they have reached sexual maturity.

When dogs are emotionally mature?

This is also the most subtle and comes long after your dog has reached its physical and sexual maturity. That said, emotional growth starts early, and it is important to help your dog develop his emotional and social skills as soon as he is brought home .

For example, toilet training, picking up simple manners, and learning to follow directions are part of a larger process of emotional maturity.

Traveling another large part of your dog towards full emotional maturity is socializing with other dogs. You should make sure that your puppy has the opportunity to mix with other dogs of both puppies and adult dogs to learn how to behave and observe the basic rules of the dog tag.

If possible, finding a well-educated and well-balanced adult dog for you puppy to play with can really boost your social and emotional growth.

For the most part, there is no one better prepared to teach your puppy important social skills than a few adult dogs feet on the ground. Your puppy can learn things like when and how it is acceptable to play with other dogs, detect limits from other dogs, and understand the dog's body language. All this is part of the process that leads to a well adjusted and emotionally stable dog.
